Types of Rims

Car or truck rims are also known as wheel rims. The wheel rims are very popular and are available I various types. The different types of rims available and popular today include spinning rims, chrome rims, truck rims, racing rims and custom rims. The different types of rims vary in design, price, size, weight and installation options. Usually, if the rims are lighter in weight, the general road performance of the car or truck is improved.

The most popular rims are the pressed steel, wire-spoke wheels and light-alloy casting wheels. Among these the pressed steel wheels rims are light, strong, taut and damage resistant. These are zero maintenance rims and the only drawback is that they are slightly heavier than alloy wheels.

One of the oldest of the rims available today is the wire-spoke type. These types of rims are light, yet strong and sturdy. The wire-spoke types are designed to survive the weight of a car and the forces of acceleration, braking and turning. The spokes are made in steel and are stronger in tension than in compression.

Another type of rim is the light-alloy casting wheel rim. These types of rims can turn many heads. Alloys have the advantage of being lighter than the other types of rims. Alloy rims are the best option for driving in the mountains or city areas where traffic congestion is common. Some alloy wheels are designed to encourage cool airflow over the brakes to prevent overheating.
